Ella Steshenko, Head

Science is a priority area of activities of the tertiary education institutions. The university has the highest potential in the field of economic sciences in Ukraine. There are widely known scientific schools in the fields of the economic theory, finance and credit issues, accounting and audit, economic analysis, marketing, statistics, international economy, etc. Almost 70% of teachers of the basic university have academic degrees and scientific ranks.

The power of the University's research potential is confirmed by the fact that there are five full members and four correspondent members of state academies of sciences, namely: A.F. Pavlenko, full member of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, B.Y. Panasiuk and V.H. Andriychuk, full members of the Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine, V.M. Borodiuk, V.F. Opryshko and V.S. Savchuk, corresponding members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Many economists are alumni of the University. The post-graduate school was opened in the University in 1946. On 2006, the contract-based post-graduate school was opened in the University for the first time. As of late 2010, there were 496 post-graduate students, including 50 students studying on a contractual basis. Currently, post-graduate students are trained in 13 specialities (9 in Economics, 2 in Pedagogy and 2 in Law). In 2010, 150 persons were admitted to the post-graduate school (74 persons on a full-time basis and 76 persons on a part-time basis), including 14 persons on a contractual basis (4 of them on a full-time basis and 10 on a part-time basis). In addition to the post-graduate school, the University trains candidates of sciences by means of assigning contenders to the relevant departments for the examination and the writing of theses (the contenders are assigned only in case of the scientific publications). In 2010, 55 persons were assigned to departments of the University. As of the end of the last year, there were 192 contenders for the Candidate's degree.

The top-qualified human resources are trained, mainly, in the doctoral school operating in the University since 1988. In 2010, 11 specialists (7 associate professors of our University and 4 associate professors from other higher education establishments of Ukraine) joined the doctoral school. Doctors of sciences are trained in 9 specialities. There were 24 persons in the doctoral school as of late 2010. The University also assigns contenders to departments of the University for the completion of doctor's theses. In 2010, 14 persons were so assigned, including 4 associate professors of our University, 1 associate professor from Kryvyi Rih Economics Institute of the State-owned Higher Education Establishment "Kyiv National Economics University named after Vadym Hetman", 1 associate professor from the Crimean Economics Institute of Vadym Hetman KNEU, and 8 associate professors from other higher education establishments of Ukraine. There were 47 persons assigned to various departments for the completion of doctor's theses as of late 2010.

Seven specialised academic councils were operating successfully: they include 6 councils for the defence of doctor's theses (with the eligibility for the defence of candidate's theses) in Economics, and one council for the defence of candidate's theses in Law. The widespread network of specialised academic councils makes it possible to train top-qualified specialists not only for the University itself, but also for many other educational establishments and research institutions in both Ukraine and other countries.

Students take an active part in the academic life in the University. There is a Students' Scientific Society, scientific study groups in the University; contests of student papers and Olympics (including national Olympics) in various disciplines, and annual inter-institutional and international scientific conferences for students are held in the University. A compendium of scientific papers of students is published.
