Practical guide on conducting trainings in European integration studies «European Union Innovation and Investment Development»

The first stage of the training "European Union Innovation and Investment Development"  (40 academic hours) was held on 19 - 23 November 2012 in Simferopol at the Crimean  Economic Institute of Kyiv National Economic University named after Vadym Hetman. The project was attended by almost 40 persons.

The second phase of the training was held in Kyiv at the premises of Kyiv National Economic University named after Vadym Hetman in the period from 11 to 15 March 2013. The number of participants was also close to 40.

Traditionally comfortable and creative atmosphere of the training contributed to the effective teamwork. Work in small groups facilitated mutual understanding between the experts of different professions in such spheres, as law, political science, geography, economics, as well as between teachers and students at different years of studies. In general, according to the participants' anonymous questionnaire, the training expectations of the audience were met. The action held contributed to a clearer understanding of the nature and patterns of innovation and investment development of the EU at both supranational and national levels, illustrated via some successful regional and entrepreneurial examples.

An interesting feature of the project was the fact, that it was attended by some participants of the previous project – "European Integration Advocacy Training", who came not alone, but encouraged their colleagues, friends and even relatives to join the new project, which is characterized by a high level of complexity. Thus, the developers of the training received a significant multiplier effect on the vertical and horizontal levels of identification.

In the 2012-2013 academic year, the project attracted public attention due to its complexity, evidenced by the fact, that the number of postgraduate students and Ph.Ds, willing to take part in it, exceeded the roominess of conference hall hosting the event. The training in Kiev was attended by academics, practitioners, and, most interestingly, the inventors, who were interested in commercialization of innovations in the EU Member States. Some of them were consulted by the organizers of the training even after its completion.

The level of knowledge acquired during the training differed by 1.7-1.9 times compared to the initial one.

In 2013-2014 two five-day training events (total duration of 80 academic hours) were implemented under the terms of the grant agreement at the SHEE "Kyiv National Economic University named after Vadym Hetman". The total number of audience involved amounted to 53 persons.

The third phase of the project was conducted on November 4 – 8, 2013. The fourth phase of the European Module took place on March 31 – April 4, 2014.

The next stage of the grant training “European Union Innovation and Investment Development” (529031-LLP-1-2012-1-UA-AJM-MO) was held in the training center of Kyiv National Economic University named after Vadym Hetman from 16 to 20 March 2015. It was attended by 32 participants from different universities from various regions of Ukraine.

Selection of the trainees had been carried out on a competitive basis. Applicant’s written grounding of his / her motivation to receive competence and use it in the future professional activity was the crucial eligibility criterion in the process of selection of the training audience. Initial testing revealed a quite significant divergence of participants in terms of their understanding the essential trends of the innovation and investment activities in the EU (5 to 15 points out of 24). The average score amounted to 11, 66. A five-day hard work of the trainers and participants, however, changed the initial situation. The average score increased to 17,22, clearly demonstrating the effectiveness of training.

Not less important was the assessment of the training by the participants, many of whom declared their wish to participate in such projects and expressed their gratitude to the European Commission for its financial and organizational support for the project, implemented in KNEU.

The 5th stage of the  40-hour training was held in Kyiv on March 16-20, 2015. There were 32 participants. The last 6th stage of the 40-hour training was held in Kyiv on November 02-06, 2015. There were 34 participants.

   FINAL ACTIVITY REPORT

Evaluation of the results of the project against the initial aims.

The general aim of the three-year project to provide high quality teaching of the Jean Monnet European Module "European Union Innovation and Investment Development", as well as disseminating of the advantages of the EU in the development of high technologies has been successfully accomplished. As it was expected, the audience had a stable interest to the module, and the opportunities of implementation of the EU experience in Ukraine. At the same time, comparing to the initial objectives there was an organisational dysfunction: we planned to hold two training events in the city of Simferopol (Crimean Autonomous Republic). However, military occupation of this territory made it impossible. So, the training event was held in Kyiv.

We expected, that academic value added growth rate (measured as the difference (in %) between the number of right answers of post-assessment and pre-assessment questionnaires) would arrive at 50 % in comparison with the initial level of the audience’s competence. However, we achieved even higher result, amounting to 60 % growth rate. We expected (based on our previous experience), that the rate of audience’s satisfaction with the training, evaluated on the basis of anonymous questionnaire, would reach the range between 4,0 and 4,2 points (based on 0-5 points scale, with 5 being the maximum positive assessment of the training results). We received even higher gratitude from our audience on the level of 4,67 points.

As it was planned, the project audience included not only economists, but also a number of experts and students, who do not come in touch with Euro-integration issues directly. Our participants represented such spheres of competence and occupations as geography, environmental protection, law, technical and engineering specialties. Also we managed to involve in our training activities some ethnic minorities, namely — Crimean Tatars, who, after the military occupation, continued their studies in Kyiv.
